Meeting with Helen Hayes MP

Norwood Forum met with Helen Hayes MP last week to follow up on transport and road safety concerns raised with Transport for London (TfL), particularly during a walkabout in late 2024. The discussion covered key issues including the Tulse Hill Gyratory, public transport, junction safety and infrastructure improvements.

  • Tulse Hill Gyratory: No new developments were shared. Funding has been allocated for design work, and Vivacity cameras are due to be installed to monitor traffic and safety.
  • Bus Services (South Circular between Tulse Hill & Croxted Road): An additional peak-time bus service has been introduced. Helen acknowledged the infrequency of the route and growing concerns but noted limited support from TfL for further action.
  • Lancaster Avenue Junction Safety: Lambeth Council has installed Vivacity cameras to monitor traffic and is considering traffic calming measures. However, implementation may be delayed by a legal case. The most recent data (Sept–Nov 2024) shows a reduction in incidents compared to preceding years, with no significant increase in road traffic incidents.
  • Cycling Infrastructure: TfL accepts that improvements are needed, but there is currently no funding. Specific concerns raised include the Lovelace to Elmcourt crossing and the section between Rosendale and Croxted Roads.
  • Rosendale Road Junction: A long-standing delay in decision-making was discussed. It is unclear whether progress is dependent on Lambeth’s cycle lane plans. Helen agreed to follow up.
  • Pedestrian Environment: Poor pavement conditions and a lack of greening were highlighted. Helen and TfL support measures to improve the environment, such as adding planting and protective barriers, but no funding is available at present.
  • Speed Cameras: Helen expressed frustration at delays in the rollout of new cloud-based speed cameras, citing procurement issues. These newer cameras are more reliable and have longer range. A second concern is that while the Metropolitan Police cover enforcement costs, local councils receive the revenue. Cllr Rezina Chowdhury is lobbying to decriminalise speeding so that Lambeth can directly manage enforcement. Helen offered to support this effort.
  • Croxted Road: LIP funding has been secured for design work. Proposals include new pedestrian crossings to north and south of Turney Road to address the high number of collisions, especially between Turney Road and the South Circular. The scheme will be based on the Sydenham Hill design principles.
  • Collision Data (September to November)
    • 2019: 7 casualties
    • 2022: 5 casualties
    • 2023: 9 casualties
    • 2024: 4 casualties
