'Sam the Wheels' dies at 98

Clovis Salmon OBE 'Sam the Wheels', sadly passed away recently at the age of 98, was interred on Friday (25 July) at West Norwood cemetery after a service at the New Testament Assembly Church in Tooting.

Clovis, known as 'Sam the Wheels' for his love of bicycles — also had a passion that was less widely known for preserving the stories of the Black British experience. Lambeth Council recently honoured him with a permanent monument made of historic bikes outside his home.

To commemorate his passing, 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning is hosting a screening of some of his films and a documentary profile of him on Friday 25 July from 3 to 9pm and on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July from noon to 5pm.

198 Contemporary Arts and Learning, at the Herne Hill end of Railton Road, is a few minutes’ walk from the home of Clovis Salmon in the same street. The bicycles in its front garden were a longstanding local landmark and testimony to his fame as “Sam the Wheels”.

Two films will be screened on a continuous loop and the feature documentary Super Sam by Sandi Hudson-Francis will be shown hourly (runtime approximately 45mins)

198 will welcome visitors to reflect on Clovis Salmon’s legacy in film and enjoy quiet reflection on his life and achievements.

For anyone who wants to know more about the life and times of one of Brixton’s most remarkable residents, this is an unmissable le opportunity.

Hot and cold beverages will be available.
