Legal proceedings were started by members of ‘Protect Brockwell Park’ on Tuesday 22 April. ‘Protect Brockwell Park’ is a campaign group calling for a much reduced impact of the events programme on Brockwell Park, its users and surrounding residents. They are challenging the legality to hold public events in Brockwell Park as planned. Brockwell Live immediately cancelled it's public engagement event to be held on Wednesday 23 April.
‘Protect Brockwell Park’ is not part of Brockwell Park Community Partners (BPCP), which is the stakeholder forum representing park users. Norwood Forum is one of 17 member organisations who have a focus on the park. BCPC is not connected to this legal action and has a far wider remit. Norwood Forum is supportive of BCPC’s breadth of involvement, supporting successful bids to the Lottery Fund for park renovation and the stunning restoration of Brockwell Hall along with biodiversity projects, tree planting, wildflower meadows and amphibian habitats. It has submitted a reasoned response to the Brockwell Live consultation which advocated a moratorium on events to allow the park to fully recover after the damage inflicted last year. BCPC has put forward it's own recommendations to limit the impact of the events program and was a co-signatory of an open letter sent by Protect Brockwell Park.
Norwood Forum is supportive of efforts to minimise the ecological and human impact of the events in Brockwell Park, whilst improving biodiversity and increasing climate resilience, tree planting and tree care. We draw a parallel with the work we have done to support Norwood Park, more central in our area of interest. Norwood Park has a major SUDs scheme underway, where the Friends Group and park users are working productively with Lambeth Council in this exciting project. Brockwell Park was also included in the Sustainable Drainage Plan 2022 to 2025 but comparative plans have been shelved as funds remain unsecured. Norwood Forum hopes a comprehensive SUDs scheme might be revisited when funding allows, given the topological, flood risk and drainage similarities between the two parks.
