Brixton novelist Alex Wheatle MBE passes away from prostate cancer

Alex Wheatle MBE, the “Brixton Bard”, has passed away at the age of 62 following a battle with prostate cancer. His novels, including Brixton Rock and the Crongton series, reflected his experiences growing up in Brixton and his time in the Lambeth care system. Wheatle’s involvement in the Brixton Uprising of 1981 and his time in prison influenced both his activism and his writing.

Lambeth Council has paid tribute to Alex Wheatle, with Cllr Donatus Anyanwu, Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities, stating, “Alex Wheatle was a key figure in telling the story of Brixton and the wider London community. His writing continues to resonate and inspire, and his legacy will endure through his work and advocacy.”

Alex Wheatle's family issued the following statement: “It is with great sadness that we inform you Alex Wheatle, our ‘Brixton Bard,’ has sadly passed away after his fight with prostate cancer. Alex’s legacy will live on through his books, the Small Axe film, and the upcoming Crongton TV series. We thank you for your support over the years and ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
