London's Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is expanding from Monday 29 August 2023 - from the area within the North and South Circular Roads to the whole London Borough area (with a few minor exemptions).
See map here on the TfL website, or the post code checker at the bottom of the web page.
9 out of 10 cars seen driving in outer London already meet the ULEZ emissions standards. (See how TfL calculated this.) To see if your vehicle meets the emissions standards, you can also use this vehicle checker.
If you drive anywhere within the ULEZ, including the expanded area from 29 August 2023, and your vehicle does not meet the emissions standards, you could face a daily charge of £12.50. This includes residents of the ULEZ. However, you do not need to pay the ULEZ charge if you are parked inside the zone and do not drive.
So ULEZ is similar to (and in addition to) the Congestion Charge, but aimed at drivers of older and more polluting vehicles, who are charged for every day that they use their vehicle. The aim is to encourage people to swap their older vehicles for newer models which create less pollution - or give up driving altogether and switch to active travel (walking or cycling) or public transport. A new Super-Loop system of buses has been established, and in our area the X68 has been renumbered as the SL6 but operates over the same route (West Croydon to Russell Square).
