#OUR KIND OF NORWOOD
Making a neighbourhood plan for Norwood. We are the Norwood Planning Assembly – a volunteer collective of local people who care about the future of Norwood. We have received powers to create a locally crafted Neighbourhood Plan for Norwood. This puts planning powers at the heart of the community and enables local people to set the long-term vision and planning policy for the area. We already think that Norwood is a great place, but we want a plan to ensure it stays that way, and that great opportunities created by regeneration and new development benefit everybody. Our Neighbourhood Plan will help meet this objective –setting out policies and guidelines to support the growth and evolution of Norwood to 2040. It's taken a few years to get here, but during 2018 the plan making will begin in earnest.
WE NEED YOU! The Norwood Plan will be powered by local people. We have got very limited funding and rely entirely on volunteers. In the meantime we need people with the following skills: graphic design and marketing, fund-raising, architecture, planning and urban design (in particular students), story telling, social media, web design, virtual reality, minecraft, artists, engagement, people manning stalls and anyone who is genuinely enthusiastic about keeping Norwood Great. A collaborative, community led approach to plan making:
We want the Neighbourhood Plan to be as inclusive as possible and ensure that as many people as possible who have a stake in the future of the local area have contributed to its preparation. To do this during 2018, the NPA will undertake a series of collaborative “plan-making” events with an aim to sharing a draft plan with the local community by Christmas 2018. This will comprise three main activities:
- 1 – “Our Kind of Norwood” – Visioning and Awareness Raising Workshops – aimed to engage as many people as possible in understanding common aspirations for the local area.
- 2 – Collaborative Design Workshops – site specific design workshops for the main opportunity areas within our boundary. These are:
o The West Norwood Commercial Area and Norwood High Street
o Norwood’s Retail Heart – the main shopping centre along Norwood Road, including the opportunity sites north of Lansdowne Hill - The main output from these workshops will be a collective understanding of potential, articulated through visualisations to be prepared by AECOM.
- 3 – Policy Task Groups – smaller round-table, options and ideas generation and testing for area wide policies and development opportunity site designations.
- The NPA Future engagement will focus on sharing outcomes and testing ideas/a draft plan towards the end of 2018
Our mission for creating a community-led neighbourhood plan.
In preparing the plan, we have developed a series of key principles that we will aim to adhere to: · To be all inclusive - we want everyone in Norwood to have their say on our future and input into the plan - this includes all residents - no matter what age, street, heritage, ethnicity, or time living in Norwood – local businesses, and others who spend time in Norwood.
· To bring people together - the plan making process provides an opportunity to bring different groups together and make the community stronger.
· To collaborate and co-produce - we want to work co-operatively with existing groups including the Station to Station BID, Norwood Forum, Norwood Action Group, The Feast, local faith groups etc etc etc
· To make the most of opportunities - including big development opportunities at the heart of the town centre and in our business hub south of West Norwood Station.
· To ensure Great design – ensuring that locally defined policy and guidelines are created that ensure all new development is well designed and benefits local people
· To raise prosperity - making sure that Norwood is a place that people want to invest and do business in
· To be better connected - making sure we benefit from transport investment including road improvements and Crossrail 2
· To raise the quality of life and health for everyone - making sure Norwood has high quality facilities, parks, open spaces and green links with great facilities and access to all while making sure air pollution is reduced.
· To be non-party political – to cross party lines and do what is right for Norwoodians.
