We have been concerned for sometime now over the degeneration of the orange mural under the Tulse Hill railway bridge on Norwood Road.
This mural was inspired by the architecture of West Norwood Cemetery and was installed by Lambeth Council in 2014. Especially in recent years the mural has been subject to graffiti and fly posting, but also staining from under bridge cleaning. Various requests to Lambeth and its former contractor had not led to the problem being addressed. As part of a walkabout this week with Serco operatives, we were pleased that a deep clean was promised, to be followed by a weekly clean. We hope this cleaning regime will deter future graffiti and misuse of the mural. We will be monitoring this.
We have also arranged for a small plaque to be installed so passers by are aware of the inspiration for the work of art: West Norwood Cemetery. The Cemetery is about half a mile further south along Norwood Road and can be visited currently 8am-4pm weekdays and 10am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays (longer hours in summer). You can find out more about the graves and monuments you can visit here on the Friends of West Norwood Cemetery website; browse the newsletters and/or purchase publications (guide maps and booklets).
If you spot any fly posting or graffiti please report this to Lambeth Council and it should be quickly removed.
