Children & Young People’s Reading Challenge Summer 2021
The fun begins on Saturday 17 July until Sunday 12 September
Get ready for Wild World Heroes the theme for the Summer Reading Challenge 2021. Lambeth Libraries in partnership with The Reading Agency have teamed up with WWF UK, the world's leading independent conservation organisation, encouraging young people to be inspired to stand up for their planet and take action for nature and the environment.
Children can take part online through the official Wild World Heroes digital Challenge platform.
The aim is to read up to six books, and children can read whatever they like from Lambeth Libraries' excellent range of books, including eBooks and eAudiobooks! Children receive a special themed Wild World Heroes collector’s wallet and stickers. A certificate and medal are awarded once the challenge is completed. So, what are you waiting for?
If you are not sure what to read, why don’t you collect a mystery bag full of exciting reads to help your reading journey, along with some activity sheets? Just contact your local library for collection details.
Join the Wild World Heroes for an exciting adventure in the fictional town of ‘Wilderville’ It’s a cool place, but there are lots of things that the Wild World Heroes can do to make their town even better for the people and animals that live there.
Currently our summer activities are hosted virtually; however, keep checking the website for up-to-date information.

Wild World Heroes Mini Challenge for Under 4s.
Under-4s have not been forgotten and can join in too! Pick up a Mini Wild World Heroes collector card, read 6 books over the summer with your child and they will be rewarded with stickers and a certificate.

Chatterbooks

Chatterbooks - an online reading and show 'n' tell group for 8-12 year-olds on the last Wednesday of the month at 4-5pm. This month’s quiz will be the Summer Reading Challenge Theme – Wild World Heroes all about nature and the environment!

Throughout the summer, families are encouraged to share their reading activity on social media with the hashtag #SummerOfReading. There will be an extensive programme of activity from 14 June, with new events and resources being announced every week, through to 17 September - including both digital activity and in-person events at libraries as they re-open. Teachers’ Reading Challenge
The Teachers’ Reading Challenge will return on 10 July for a second summer! The Challenge, which is delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with the Open University, encourages school and library staff to expand their knowledge of children’s books and develop their understanding of reading for pleasure pedagogy. The Challenge is for anybody who is a Reader Teacher. That is, put simply, teachers who read and readers who teach, and includes school and public librarians, headteachers, SENCOs, TAs and trainee teachers. Local History
Poles in South London: Local Heroes Archive
Lambeth Libraries and Archives are working with Poles in South London - Local Heroes Archive project to focus on a critical but neglected part of the Poles’ story in London – the growth and decline of the ‘Gmina Polska Londyn-Południe’ (GPL-P), the Polish Community Association of South London. The association aimed to preserve Polish language, culture and heritage. It supported community groups, activities and organisations including schools, scouts and folk-dance clubs. Drawn out - a live online comics reading.
Rachael House is an artist who has published a book of the drawings she made over the course of the last year. Resistance Sustenance Protection is a year of drawings - a pandemic record, an archive, a call for change.
Alongside the book, Rachael House will facilitate Drawn Out, an online live reading with invited artists- Holly Casio, Natasha Natarajan, Robert Bidder, Candy Guard, Monique Jackson and Jess Hannar.
Their sequential drawings and comics cover class, race, unions, fat politics, having long Covid, queer politics, disability and more, and how the pandemic has impacted on them and others. These observations are rich, funny, angry and compassionate.

Black Lens Festival
Black Lens Film Festival is an online and in-person hybrid event opening on 16th July, celebrating the best in Black British film throughout the decades with screenings, showcases, shorts, panels, and family fun. The festival is in partnership with programme partner and curator alt-africa.com.

How did your first reading impact your reading habits for life?

Would you like to take part in a study of what helped form your reading habits?
The study is investigating the effect that developing good reading habits as a child or adolescent has on adults becoming lifelong readers and other contributory factors in the digital age. Research shows that although many adults in the UK enjoy reading, some adults are reluctant to read or do not read at all. This study aims to gain greater understanding of what motivates adults to read, to identify any barriers to reading and to make recommendations on how to support initiatives to promote reading in adults. Morley Prize for Unpublished Writers of Colour

An annual prize jointly presented by Morley College London and the Rachel Mills Literary Agency, awarded to a previously unpublished author of colour.
The prize is intended to nurture and provide opportunities for aspiring novelists of colour, promote diverse fiction across the broader literary landscape of Britain and continue Morley College’s long history of educational excellence, community engagement, and support for social justice.
