A Small Studio, a local architecture and landscape practice, is working closely with urban ecologist Jo Ferguson from the Bat Conservation Trust on a project called the ‘Bat’s Highway’.
This is a project to raise bat awareness to protect them where they are present and give tips and tricks to improve bat habitats where they need a little extra help. The project is about creating a green infrastructure link above Norwood High Street to help bats move between three main parks (Streatham Common, Brockwell Park and Crystal Palace) in South London.
As part of the project, A Small Studio have also launched their first charitable product called ‘A Small Bat Pack’ which is starter kit for young people to improve their outdoor space (whether a terrace, a stoop, a garden or a pocket garden on the street) into a bat-friendly space. The Bat Pack is jammed with bat-friendly activities and importantly, it has DIY manuals on things you can do (insect hotel, pond, bat-friendly planting, compost heap). All of these manuals will be accessible and downloadable for free from their website, so it is not necessary to buy the bag. If anyone does purchase the bag, it is sold at net cost with a 20% contribution to the BCT.
