We have reported before, and made representations, on the need for Lambeth Council to provide more cycle hangars in the south of the borough and our local area in particular. Local people, often in shared buildings, need secure cycle parking so they can cycle more. Hills are not an obstacle for many. And then there are electric bikes.
A cycle hangar is a cylindrical-like container with a gas sprung locking door to ensure quiet operation. Inside, it has metal bike hoops for the locking of bikes. Each hangar has the capacity to hold six bikes and takes up less space than a single car. Annual membership costs £42 per space; apply via the Cyclehoop website.
Lambeth is currently consulting on the proposed locations for a further 60 hangers. Whilst most are not in our area, it is good to see that some are proposed for Knights Hill and Thurlow Park Wards: Bloom Grove, Guernsey Grove, Hawarden Grove, Knollys Road (two locations), Thornlaw Road and Thurlby Road.
You can support the location of your nearest cycle hanger, and read more here on the Lambeth website. The consultation ends on 28 June 2021.
Lambeth states that demand for additional bike storage is extremely high with over 11,300 applications on the waitlist.
