As first reported in the Norwood Forum's second Community Conversation Lambeth Council is introducing timed road closures at a number of local schools: School Streets.
School Streets is a scheme set up by the council to restrict vehicle access to streets around schools in the borough during pick up and drop off times. Emergency vehicles will still be able to access the road but in general road usage will be deterred. This includes vehicles driven by parents to the school gates.
In Norwood the schools currently taking part are:
- Elm Wood SE27 9RR: Carnac St closed from Hamilton Rd to Clive Rd
- Hitherfield SW16 2JQ: Hitherfield Rd closed from Mount Nod Rd to Leigham Vale.
- Julian’s SE27 0JF: Wolfington Rd closed from Casewick Rd to Knights Hill
- St Luke’s SE27 0DZ: Linton Grove closed between Basil Gardens and Elder Rd.
More schools are expected to join the scheme in coming weeks.
This is a controversial scheme and process and Norwood Forum would be interested to hear your views. The official consultation where you can have you say is available via this link.
Before offerng your comments, you may care to read this recent report by Edinburgh Napier University, which shows the likely increase in cycling, walking and wheeling to school, and the usual dissipation of early objections from local residents.
