Children’s competition launched to name popular playground and green space in West Norwood

Lambeth Council and healthcare investor Fulcrum are running a competition for local children to help name a popular green space and playground area next to West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre.

The competition is being launched at the ‘West Norwood Feast’ this coming weekend on Sunday 5 June and will run throughout the month with a host of great prizes up-for-grabs.

The West Norwood Health and Leisure centre opened in 2014 and through continued investment, the council and Fulcrum have helped to create a playground area and well-loved green spaces around the building that have become popular with residents and families. The space also hosts part of the fabulous West Norwood Feast.

Local under-16s are now being given the chance to help name the green space by sending their naming entries throughout June to namethatspacewnhlc@lambeth.gov.uk. The ten best entries will win a range of prizes including West Norwood Leisure swim passes and local Picture House vouchers. First place earns a Family Better Leisure membership package for a year for Lambeth sites including Streatham Ice Rink.

In July, the community group ‘Friends of West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre’ will then agree the top 10 naming suggestions that will be put to a public vote to help choose the overall winner, allowing the green space to be officially renamed this summer.

The competition is a great chance for local children to use their imagination and think of a memorable name for the green space that will be used for many years to come. Naming suggestions could reflect the history of the area, what parts of the green area the kids like best or the name could honour some of the famous faces past and present from the West Norwood area. The naming competition may also be a chance to recognise some of the ‘unsung heroes’ such as teachers, nurses or community workers that have supported local residents through the challenges of the last few years.

The naming competition is open for any local children aged 16 and under. Entries can be submitted from Sunday 5 June to Thursday 30 June by emailing: namethatspacewnhlc@lambeth.gov.uk. Please include the child’s name along with the name and contact details for a parent or guardian. A maximum of three entries per child are allowed.

Residents will then be able to vote for their favourite in July via a survey available here.
