West Norwood Health & Leisure Centre: closure of pool and other facilities - update 2

Lambeth Council has now issued a statement on progress made towards the reopening of the swimming pool which has been closed since last summer.

“Lambeth Council is grateful for the continued patience and understanding regarding the temporary closure of the swimming pool at West Norwood Health & Leisure Centre for essential repairs to the building’s roof and swim change facilities. Lambeth acknowledges the impact the situation has had on members and the community as a whole.

Lambeth are pleased to report the following progress update from the PFI provider responsible for the building works to the swimming changing facilities and pool hall;

 Phase 1 waterproofing works on the male and female swim change and vanity area have been completed, access to this area will be available from early April, subject to final sign-off by Lambeth and handover.

 Phase 2 works on the male and female family change, locker area, and mixed showers are progressing well and on schedule to complete at the end of March. Access to this area will be available from early April, subject to final sign-off by Lambeth and handover

 Phase 3 waterproofing works to the swimming pool hall have commenced with a completion date of July, these facilities should be open to the public in July subject to final sign-off by Lambeth and handover.

All other areas of the West Norwood {Health &} Leisure Centre remain open. GLL (“Better) has asked customers to contact staff at the Leisure Centre if customers require access to alternative provisions or appropriate adjustments to membership. Where possible, ‘Better’ have made arrangements for swimming lessons to be held at alternative locations until the pool at West Norwood is reopened.

 Lambeth Council is working to ensure that these works are carried out by the PFI provider within the timescales provided and will continue to hold the provider to account.

 Lambeth will continue to provide updates on progress during the coming months and look forward to the reopening of the pool in July.”

 A reminder too that from 1 April 2023 Lambeth Council will be running its leisure services “in-house”, ending its contract with Better GLL. The service will be kown as “Active Lambeth” and current Better memberships and direct debits should be transfered automatically (existing customers should receive a notification email about the transfer).
