It's a win that will go down in history ... #ScrapTheYard - the grass roots community campaign - triumphed against overwhelming odds to see Lambeth Planning Applications Committee unanimously vote against the application from Southwark Metals to build a metal recycling yard at the end of the narrow cul-de-sac Windsor Grove (where the Royal Mail sorting office is).
With no resources apart from sheer community power - together with acres of community time and effort and every ounce of skill we could muster - the campaign successfully fought back against highly skilled and extremely experienced consultants - both Lambeth's own and from Southwark Metals.
It's a David and Goliath story for modern times.
Huge thanks to Helen Hayes our MP, Cllrs Matthew Bennett, Pete Elliott and Jane Pickard, Rob Andrew from Norwood Action Group for speaking so eloquently at last night’s meeting. Our own Chair, Kim, also spoke against the application.
The battle is won but we expect the war to continue as an appeal is extremely likely. It’s never been more important to support the campaign.
