Following Sunday's snow we have taken a look at Lambeth’s winter gritting and snow clearance service which runs from 1 November to 31 March. During this period  Lambeth is on standby to try and keep our roads and streets clear of snow and ice. Details of the service are set out on this web page on the Council's new website in an easy to understand way.  It is obviously impractical to cover all streets, and the service aims to grit roads in three different priority bands:

• Priority 1 – Our main roads.
• Priority 2 –Busy roads with either emergency services, transport hubs, schools, steep hills or support town centres.
• Priority 3 – All other roads that are not included in either of the Priority 1 or 2 routes. We will only grit these highways when a severe weather event is forecast.

This map sets out the priority roads in our area.

For pavements grit is applied with hand shovels rather than by vehicles, and grit bins are sited around the borough. The Council aims to treat footway locations that have any of the following features:

• Emergency services.
• Transport hubs.
• Town centres.
• Schools.
• Sheltered Housing locations.
• Steep hills.

This set of ward maps sets out the priorty areas for gritting pavements. You will see that many roads in our district are at least prioirty two due to the number of steep hills.

The Council is looking for volunteers to become Snow Wardens; they clear ice and snow from footways to keep our streets safe. You can volunteer either as a group or as an individual and you will receive free training and equipment.
