As part of the funding conditions imposed on TfL by Government in the recent funding settlement, the Mayor has outlined a number of fares proposals which he was having to explore in order to generate income. Among several options being considered are the proposals to increase the age of eligibility for the 60+ fare concession.
Under this proposed option, the age of eligibility for the 60+ Oyster photocard would increase by a month, every other month. This would result in the age of eligibility rising by six months every year. TfL say existing 60+ card holders will not be impacted.
TfL is now engaged in a somewhat low key consultation on this option. Views can be sent by email to: LocalCommunitiesandPartnerships@tfl.gov.uk until 26 October 2022.
TfL will produce an Equalities Impact Assessment before pursuing the option. This process will include consideration of retaining the current card for those on low incomes.
You can read more in this TfL press release about the funding settlement and the resultant changes to fares being considered in order to generate more income. These include making permanent the current temporary clawing back of the hours of operation for the over 60's Oyster photocard (i.e. from 9am only on all TfL services, Monday to Friday).
Currently, if you are 60 or over and live in a London borough, you can get a 60+ London Oyster photocard until you become eligible for a Freedom Pass. You can apply online for the card from two weeks before your 60th birthday. The cost is £20.
