Across the country, around 135,000 new donors are needed annually to ensure there is enough blood available to patients in need of lifesaving treatments. In London alone, 40,000 new blood donors each year are needed to meet demand,

There is a particular need for people of Black Caribbean and Black African heritage to sign up. For those who need blood regularly to treat conditions, such as sickle cell disease, the best match usually comes from blood donors of the same ethnic background. Sickle cell is the country’s fastest growing genetic blood disorder and one that disproportionately impacts people of Black African and Black Caribbean heritage.
So, while donors are needed from all backgrounds, Londoners of Black African and Black Caribbean heritage are particularly encouraged to consider becoming donors.
