Volunteering opportunities this week

Lambeth Council publishes local volunteering opportunities on  a weekly basis. Here's this week's opportunities in our local area:

Age Exchange delivery

Age Exchange deliver a virtual day care service for people with dementia and their carers.  The service provides support and activities to help maintain wellbeing. They are looking for volunteers to deliver activity boxes to the homes of people with dementia and their carers once a month.  This is a contact free delivery service. The delivery would happen once a month to 10 addresses and are picked up from Blackheath (SE3). You would need to either be able to drive or cycle in order to carry the boxes. Age UK bag delivery

Age UK Lambeth are an independent local charity working in the community to support older people, their families and carers. They have put together isolation gift bags for over 200 residents and would require your help with delivering them. The bags can be picked up on Friday 14 August between 1pm and 4pm from Age UK’s office.They require five volunteers who would have access to a mode of transport, such as a bike or car, in order to assist with carrying the gift bags. The main postcodes that deliveries will happen to are:

  • SE27
  • SE5
  • SW16
  • SW9

Hook House Community Centre

Hook House Community Centre is based in Knight’s Hill (SE27 0EN) and deliver youth activities, a food bank and have an allotment that requires a large amount of work. They are also currently in the process of setting up respite for children with disabilities. They require volunteers to help with a range of tasks, from on-site roles (cleaning, supporting workshops or event planning) to remote administrative roles.

OnHand Shopping

The shopping service is operating in the whole borough, providing support to residents who are not able to leave their homes due to Coronavirus or other health reasons, but not require an emergency food package. The time commitment is to assist with shopping one day a week.

Task – downloading a phone application (through which the service is managed), taking shopping orders, conducting shops on behalf of residents, taking a photograph of shopping receipts on delivery. Please note, this role will involve volunteers paying for residents’ shops and then being reimbursed through a simple expense process.  They require volunteers from the whole borough, but would particularly welcome more assistance from those living in the following postcode areas: SE19, SW8 and SW9. Age UK befriending calls

Age UK Lambeth are an independent local charity working in the community to support older people, their families and carers. COVID-19 has unfortunately affected the older community particularly, leaving many feeling sad and alone. Therefore, Age UK Lambeth are looking for over 10 volunteers to enable friendly 30 minute phone calls to some of Lambeth’s most isolated residents, helping them feel connected, reducing levels of anxiety and bringing joy to them and to you as a volunteer.  In order to assist with this, please sign up to one of the training webinars below:

Foodbank collection

Local foodbanks require assistance with collections of food from supermarkets and other collection points.
1. Norwood, Brixton and Waterloo foodbanks
Lambeth food banks currently need volunteer drivers to help with deliveries Monday - Friday/mid week, mostly between 11am - 3pm. You must have your own car or van with full Mot and insurance, clean driving licence and able to commit to 2/3 hours at least once a week for the next 6 weeks. They are based out of their warehouse at SW2 3BH.
2. Millenium Community Services (Southwyck Estate, Brixton)
Millenium Community Services are based at Southwyck Hall on Southwyck Estate, Brixton. They are running a foodbank at the hall and collect surplus food from Tesco in Brixton on Saturdays between 8.30am and 9.30am.  They require volunteers to pick up the food and deliver it to their distribution centre in West Norwood.
