As the British Legion states: 'Every year the nation unites to make sure that no-one is forgotten and to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.'
With Lockdown this means official ceremonies are limited if at all, but across our three Wards there are several really interesting memorials to make your own personal visit to (some are inside so please check the church opening times), these include:
Vincennes, Vincennes Estate, Junction of Carnac Street And Hamilton Road SE27 9RR.
Perhaps one of the most evocative is this memorial which commemorates the fallen Resistance Agents working in the Vincennes area of France during WW2 including Violette Szabo, a Lambeth girl, and Lilian Rolfe, whose father lived in Knatchbull Road. Tablets inset into the surrounding wall commemorate individual agents and the names of the nearby blocks of flats also commemorate the agents with names including Odette and Violette Szabo. More information here.
St Lukes Church, Knights Hill, SE27 0DT
In the centre of West Norwood, St Lukes has three memorials. Firstly there is the Memorial Garden itself with two stone tablets to hunt for in the planted beds, then there is the Cross right outside the church and finally inside there is a tablet commemorating WW1. More information here.
All Saints Church, Lovelace Road, Junction with Rosendale Road, SE21 8JY
No photo of the memorial but it is a bronze plaque with arched detailing extending above the central section. Within this central section is roped detailing surrounding a cross and dedicatory inscription, and the names of those killed in World War I are listed either side of this central section. The Church is Grade I listed. More information here.
Chatsworth Baptist Church, Chatsworth Way, SE27 9HN
Not on the War Memorials map, we only have this photo taken by Norwood Forum. You can find the memorial on the right hand side of the church. The church has its own website here.
St Peters Church, Leigham Court Road, SW16 2SD
St Peters has a teak and stone crucifix commemorating WW1 and you can find it in the grounds of the church, just off Leigham Court Road. More information here.
West Norwood Cemetery, Norwood Road, SE27 9JU
The memorial cross stands at the entrance to the cemetery, along with screen walls for both WW1 and WW2 containing the names of those whose graves could not be marked. More information here - the map also shows many of the individual war graves within the cemetery.
Lychgate, Peabody Estate, Rosendale Road, SE24 9EQ
Perhaps the most intriguing of all is this Lychgate with beautiful copper WW1 memorial panels. More information here.
You can find more details on all of these and search for others further afield on the War Memorials website here.
Remembering Herne Hill is a volunteer-led project which aims to tell the story of all those from Herne Hill, South London, who served and died in the First World War. More information on this tremendous project here.
